Vegan Fish & Chips

Vegan Fish & Chips in London

Updated 30.03.25
Before going vegetarian then vegan I used to enjoy eating fish and chips. Well after many years of 'going without' I am pleased to say we now have a number of places that offer vegan fish and chips in London.

The 'fish' comes in three types:
  • Firstly there is a wheat/soya mix that gives the 'fish' a nice firm texture and a white colouring.
  • Secondly there is battered tofu. This is basically a piece of tofu which is marinated and then covered in a sheet of nori seaweed and then battered. So it looks a bit like fish, but has the texture of tofu.
  • Thirdly there is banana blossom plant, which when marinated and covered in nori and battered has certain similarities to the texture of fish, but instead of being white is a brown purpley colour.

RECOMMENDATION
Unity Diner is a non-profit ethical vegan diner serving vegan burgers and sausages, but they also have the most wonderful vegan 'fish and chips'. You won't be disappointed.
Although called tofish it seems they use the wheat/soya blend of fish which I prefer. The really tasty 'fish' comes with the best tasting chips I've had in a long time together with mushy peas and tartar sauce.

Sutton & Sons (non-vegan)

Sutton & Sons have been running traditional fish and chip shops for many years. They then opened London's first vegan fish & chip shop. Although this has now closed they have incorporated the full vegan menu at each of their other shops. They use banana blossom to get the fish-like texture.
